"Schumann and the Art of Piano Destruction" - rehearsal photos

Here are some pictures from the initial rehearsal for "Schumann and the Art of Piano Destruction". There is more information about this show here.

The purpose of this rehearsal was to find out just how one might destroy a piano interestingly. That is to say, what makes a good sound, what is easy to smash, what is pointless to even try and smash, etc (it turns out pianos are very solid things). I was also trying out the digital effects system - there are eight (cheap) microphones gaffa taped to various parts of the instrument.

You can see here various shots of Tim and myself trying things out under the experienced guidance of piano builder/restorer David Farrell (note the superiority of his sledge wielding).

It is very fun to smash a piano. The challenge will be to present it in a concise and dramatic manner.
